The developer-enthusiast presented the first preliminary release of the open-source operating system GentleOS, designed specifically for vintage computers. The project is aimed at fans of retro technology and offers a classic graphical interface, while maintaining compatibility even with very weak systems based on i386 processors, 4 MB of RAM and VGA graphics. The system is distributed under the GPLv2 license and can be run as on real equipment
both in the QEMU emulator.
GentleOS uses a monolithic kernel and includes a basic set of drivers and applications, including a calculator, a calendar, a graphics editor and several games, including Snake, Tetris and Sappers. A version of GentleOS/16 is also being developed for even older 16-bit computers with Intel 80186 processors, capable of working with only 192 KB of RAM and CGA graphics.
