The process of disassembling the Intel 80386 microcode has been completed.

May 24th 2026 (language: English // Russian)

Enthusiasts for the first time were able to extract and disassemble the microcode of the Intel 80386 processor, which for decades remained virtually unexplored due to lack of documentation. Using high-resolution crystal photos and AI to reconstruct a binary image, the researchers determined the structure of microinstructions, the principles of their execution and the logic of the internal blocks of the processor. All project materials are published on GitHub in the public domain

The study showed that in 80386, all instructions are executed through microcode, which mainly controls hardware accelerators, rather than implementing algorithms directly. A potential vulnerability was also discovered: when checking access rights to 4-byte ports, the processor could incorrectly process the last address, which theoretically allowed circumventing access restrictions to some devices.
