NetHack 5.0: the return of a legend after 11 years.

On May 2, 2026, the long-awaited release of the cult roguelike game NetHack version 5.0.0 was released - the first major update since 2015. The project, which dates back to 1987 and is inspired by Rogue, remains one of the key games of the genre. The developers presented an updated version with documentation and Guidebook, available for a wide range of platforms - from modern Windows and Linux to AmigaDOS and VMs.
The new release includes more than 3,100 changes: the code has been brought to the C99 standard, cross-compilation support has been improved, and the old level generation tools have been replaced with Lua solutions that are processed right during the game. At the same time, version 5.0.0, like any release with the .0 index, may contain errors, and old saves are incompatible with it - developers are actively waiting for reviews and bug reports.
