MicroWeb 2.1 release and mTCP acceleration.
May 7th 2026
(language: English // Russian)
While progressive humanity is switching to quantum encryption, the retro community is proving that it is still too early to scrap the 16-bit code. In March-April 2026, two landmark updates were released for DOS-net lovers.
1. The MicroWeb graphical browser has been updated to version 2.1.
The author of jhhoward did the almost impossible — he provided stable support for modern TLS 1.3 protocols in a 16-bit environment. Older machines can now open protected resources directly. What's new: Added support for XMS memory (now the browser is not so cramped within 640 KB), optimized work with RAM and added simple file downloads.

2. Update the mTCP (NetDrive) network stack.
On April 10, 2026, Michael Brutman released an experimental version of NetDrive, which, when connected to the Internet, works 2-3 times faster than previous builds. This greatly simplifies the use of remote disks on "iron" antiques.

Important nuances:
Processor: Intel 80486 and higher are recommended for comfortable work with TLS (encryption requires resources).
Memory: For MicroWeb 2.1, it is now highly desirable to have an XMS driver (HIMEM.SYS).
